Scan tools assist a professional mechanic

Scan Tool
Scan tools have become absolutely necessary in modern automation. Professional mechanics and garage technician are indebted to the auto scan tool that will probably let him know immediately what is wrong with the engine. So what is a scan tool? It is a device that is used to obtain and access diagnostic information on board an automobile. They come in various shapes and sizes but there are usually two main types: the stand alone and the computer based. The former does not require a computer to work, has a small screen with a modest interface and runs only with the help of some software with limited functions. The cost too is small compared to the PC based scan tool, which has a number of advantages, e.g. large and easy to read screen, unlimited storage space for data, a good selection of software that can be updated, ability to located data remotely etc.

These scan tools are generally standardized and can be used in a majority of automobiles. This standard is called OBDII or On board diagnostics, version II. This keeps a check on the emission levels of the automobile. Generally, the fuel injection, ignition system and automatic transmission on most modern multi fuel injected automobiles and vans are run with the help of one or more computers. These computers monitor sensors and collect data of all parts of the engine and other systems in the car. These then send commands to the fuel injectors and ignition coils to fire cylinders to begin the running of the car’s engine. This same data is also used to fine-tune the process of combustion with the right amount of gasoline and give the car the correct ignition timing for the provision of efficient, clean combustion for optimum power and low pollution. Actually, there are a number of sensors that measure each function of the car engine e.g. throttle opening, air and coolant temperature, engine rpm etc. The Scan Tool system has the capability to self correct the fuel mixture and ignition at every crankshaft revolution. If there is a major problem with any one of them which the scan tool cannot self correct, the mechanic will know at a glance what it is and rectify immediately. It is also a great tool to scan air bag and ABS codes and can diagnose and clear all related problems. This situation is definitely better than what it was a few decades ago.

For motorcycle enthusiasts, bonding with their bike is pleasure. They will know the running of their bikes only if they tinker with all its minutest parts. As motorcycles are specialized high performance machines they use specific hardware and proper motorcycle tools to be maintained effectively. These tools consist of carb fuel and chain tools, drain pans, engine and hand tools, racks and work mats, spark plug and suspension tools, safety wire etc. Most of these motorcycle tools can be folded way for easy storage.
